Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I

BeginnerMinna no Nihongo seriesIn-depth analysis · 2026-08-26

Verdict

The classroom standard, finally modernized — still not the solo pick.

The October 2025 third edition is Minna no Nihongo's first revision in thirteen years, and it retires the two stock criticisms: the 2012-era scenarios are rewritten and the CD is gone in favor of free web and app audio. What defines the book is deliberately unchanged — a Japanese-only main text with the English explanations sold as a separate companion, and a drill volume no rival matches, with answer keys included. That trade is exactly why language schools in Japan hand you this book, and why self-studiers usually fare better with an explanations-on-the-page course instead.

Best for

  • Classroom and language-school learners — in Japan this is the de facto standard text
  • Drill-hungry learners who want high-volume pattern practice with the answers included
  • Multilingual study contexts — the Japanese-only main text pairs with grammar companions in fifteen languages

Not ideal for

  • Self-studiers who want explanations on the page — expect constant two-book juggling with the separate companion
  • Anyone who wants the full workbook and kanji ecosystem this year — the third edition's companions arrive through September 2026
  • Learners itching for casual Japanese early — everything arrives in polite form first

What's inside 目次

  1. 01本冊 — 第1課〜第25課Main text · Lessons 1–25 (Japanese only)
    • Each lesson: sentence patterns, example sentences, dialogue, drills A/B/C, exercises — with review sections and conjugation tables
    • Third-edition rewrites modernize the scenes — a university cafeteria, an evacuation drill — and refresh the vocabulary
  2. 02別冊 — 解答・スクリプトBundled booklet · answers and listening scripts
  3. 03別売 — 翻訳・文法解説 英語版Sold separately · Translation & Grammar Notes (English)
    • Vocabulary translations, grammar explanations and cultural notes per lesson — effectively required for self-study

Strengths & weaknesses 長所と短所

  • The heaviest drill architecture in any beginner course — three practice tiers per lesson plus exercises, with answer keys included rather than sold separately.
  • The 2025 revision fixes what critics actually cited — dated scenarios rewritten, vocabulary refreshed, audio moved to a free app — while nearly every English review online still describes the 2012 edition.
  • It is the book Japanese language schools actually use, so classroom-bound learners arrive already on the right track.
  • The two-book workflow is unchanged — the main text stays Japanese-only, and the ¥2,000 + tax English companion is effectively mandatory for self-study.
  • The third edition's own workbook and kanji companions don't finish arriving until September 2026, and the publisher advises against mixing second-edition companions with the new text — drill-hungry buyers face a real edition decision this year.
  • The syllabus itself is untouched, so the old pedagogical complaints persist — polite forms long before casual speech, and kanji outsourced to separate books.
