About NihongoBooks

An independent, one-person guide to buying Japanese textbooks without edition confusion or invented expertise.

Why this site exists

There are too many Japanese textbooks, and too much conflicting advice about them. Even after choosing a series, a buyer still has to identify the current edition, decide which companion volumes are necessary, and compare stores that may list the same title differently.

NihongoBooks is an editorial project for English-speaking learners of Japanese that treats those buying details as the product. We verify bibliographic facts, separate publisher claims from first-party evidence, and say plainly when we have not used a book. It is written and maintained by one person. The “we” around the site is editorial habit, not a team of experts — and the methodology page shows the evidence boundary for every kind of recommendation.

What this site is not

  • Not affiliated with the JLPT, the Japan Foundation, or Japan Educational Exchanges and Services
  • Not a publisher partner — no publisher approves our coverage before publication
  • No sponsored rankings, paid placements, or “featured” slots
  • Not a testing lab — most book pages are verified catalog entries, not reviews

How this site makes money

Some outbound bookstore and tutoring links are affiliate links: if you buy a book or start lessons after clicking one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That is the whole business model. Commissions never decide what gets recommended — we routinely tell readers not to buy books at all. The details are in the affiliate disclosure.
