初級日本語 げんき I

Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese I

BeginnerGenki seriesIn-depth analysis · 2026-08-26

Verdict

The default first textbook for a reason — if you'll actually do the drills.

Genki earns its status on structure: twelve predictable lessons that scaffold grammar, vocabulary and output in a rhythm no competitor matches, backed by the largest third-party ecosystem in Japanese learning. The third edition's upgrades — clearer grammar notes, modernized vocabulary, app-based audio — fix the book's age, not its classroom DNA. Studying solo works, but budget for the separate answer key and a video companion: the free exercise site that completed the standard self-study recipe for years shut down in October 2025, and most guides haven't noticed.

Best for

  • First-time learners who want one structured path from zero to JLPT N5
  • Self-studiers willing to do written drills and pair exercises solo (write both sides)
  • Anyone planning to continue into university courses or Quartet — this is the track they assume

Not ideal for

  • Phrase-seekers and travelers — the college-campus vocabulary arrives before survival Japanese
  • App-first learners who won't open a workbook; the value is in the drills
  • Kanji-focused learners — the reading-and-writing appendix is the book's weakest limb

What's inside 目次

  1. 01会話・文法編 第1課〜第12課Conversation & Grammar · Lessons 1–12
    • Each lesson: dialogue (recorded at natural and paused speeds), vocabulary, grammar points in English, drills, culture notes
    • From New Friends and Shopping through Kabuki and Feeling Ill — everyday campus-life situations
  2. 02読み書き編 第1課〜第12課Reading & Writing · Lessons 1–12
    • Hiragana (L1) and katakana (L2), then graded readings with the lesson's kanji
  3. 03別売 — ワークブック・解答Sold separately · workbook and answer key
    • Workbook with tear-out drill sheets; the official answer key covers textbook and workbook for both volumes

Strengths & weaknesses 長所と短所

  • The lesson scaffolding is the product — each grammar point arrives with a dialogue, drills and recycled vocabulary in a rhythm that carries you to the next lesson without planning.
  • The biggest support ecosystem of any textbook — full free video companion series, official SRS decks on Bunpro and Anki, and a workbook path teachers and courses already assume.
  • The 2020 third edition modernized what mattered — clearer grammar explanations, current vocabulary, culture notes, and re-recorded audio in a free app with speed control.
  • Classroom DNA — pair exercises assume a partner and answers are sold separately, so solo learners should add the official answer key from day one.
  • The long-standing free companion site that supplied self-checkable exercises shut down at the publisher's request in October 2025 — older self-study guides still point at it.
  • The reading-and-writing section teaches kanji by rote with furigana everywhere; nearly everyone bolts on a dedicated kanji tool.
