The books you actually need for JLPT N2

And, just as important, the ones you can skip.

The short version

With three months or more: Shin Kanzen Master Grammar, Reading and Listening, plus the Official Practice Workbook in the final two weeks. About ¥4,900 + tax for the set. A separate vocabulary or kanji book is only worth it if that area is genuinely weak — most people should skip both.

Evidence boundary: the Shin Kanzen Master Reading recommendation rests on our in-depth analysis. Other titles are compared from NDL records, publisher documentation and official samples; their individual pages are catalog entries, not reviews.

01

You have three months or more

With a real runway, buy the series that asks the most of you. Shin Kanzen Master is written almost entirely in Japanese, mirrors the exam's question formats, and explains why answers are right — which is what moves an N2 score. Start with Grammar: the reading section is, in practice, a grammar test with longer sentences.

Reading is where most self-studiers lose the exam, so treat the Reading volume as core, not optional. Add Listening if you are not hearing Japanese daily. In the last two weeks, sit the Official Practice Workbook under timed conditions — it is the only book of real past questions.

02

The exam is one or two months away

Six weeks is not enough time to work through Shin Kanzen Master honestly — and an unfinished rigorous book is worth less than a finished light one. Nihongo So-matome is built for exactly this: each volume is a daily calendar (“two pages a day” is printed on the cover), with English translations so you never stall on an explanation.

Buy Grammar plus the volume for your weakest section, and still keep the Official Practice Workbook for a timed rehearsal. Accept the trade-off: So-matome covers the ground faster but shallower. (The cross-level version of this playbook, updated for the December 2026 sitting: eight weeks to the JLPT.)

03

You only want to buy two books

Then buy the two with the highest score-per-page: Shin Kanzen Master Grammar and the Official Practice Workbook. Grammar knowledge carries three of the exam's sections at once; the official workbook calibrates everything else. Total: ¥1,900 + tax.

04

One section is dragging you down

Target the single volume for that section instead of buying a series. Two honest notes: if Shin Kanzen's all-Japanese explanations are still too steep for you, TRY! N2 is the softer grammar route; and vocabulary or kanji volumes are the only case where So-matome beats Shin Kanzen even on a long runway — memorization wants a calendar, not rigor.

Questions people actually ask

Shin Kanzen Master or Sou Matome for N2?

Runway decides. Three months or more: Shin Kanzen Master — all-Japanese, exam-format, and it explains why answers are right, not just which. Six weeks: So-matome's two-pages-a-day calendar with English glosses, accepting shallower coverage. Vocabulary and kanji are the one area where So-matome wins regardless. Our N2 comparison has the volume-by-volume breakdown.

Is Shin Kanzen Master enough to pass N2?

The Grammar, Reading and Listening volumes plus a timed Official Practice Workbook pass are this page's whole three-month plan — with Reading treated as core, since reading is where most self-studiers lose the exam. What no drill set supplies is daily reading and listening volume; separate vocabulary or kanji books are only for a genuinely weak area.

Do I need to buy all the Shin Kanzen Master N2 books?

No. If you only buy two, make it Shin Kanzen Master N2 Grammar and the Official Practice Workbook — ¥1,900 + tax total. Grammar knowledge carries three of the exam's sections at once, and the workbook is the only book of real past questions. Add Reading as the third with a longer runway.

How big is the jump from N3 to N2?

N2's pass mark is actually lower than N3's — 90 of 180 versus 95 — because the material is a full tier harder, not because the exam is kinder. In practice, reading is the section that decides N2: the reading paper is, in effect, a grammar test with longer sentences.

Is Shin Kanzen Master N2 all in Japanese?

Almost entirely, yes — the translation support present at N3 is gone from the N2 volumes. If that's still a wall, TRY! N2 is the softer grammar route, and So-matome's daily calendars carry English glosses. Shin Kanzen's all-Japanese, exam-format pages are also themselves rehearsal for a paper written entirely in Japanese.
