Where the numbers come from

Hour figures are the Japanese Language Education Center's cumulative study-hour comparison (2010–2015 data, as preserved on Wikibooks), in both of its columns: learners with a Chinese- or Korean-character background, and learners starting kanji from zero. They are ranges on purpose — the low end is focused, efficient study; the high end is typical. Exam dates are the JLPT's standard July and December sittings. The book picks mirror our per-level JLPT guides, and our method page covers how those are built.
