Verdict

The gentler Tobira the classic always needed — half of it, for now.

The 2025 rebuild keeps exactly what made Tobira loved — the same eight content themes, modernized — and engineers away what made it feared: readings split in two to soften the jump out of a beginner course, can-do lists opening every lesson, and grammar notes expanded with the errors learners actually make. Two honest caveats define a 2026 purchase: answer keys are still locked behind the teacher portal, and this volume is only lessons 1–8 — the second half arrives around September 2026, and the community's verdict on whether the rebuild is truly gentler is not yet in.

  • Genki II finishers drawn to Tobira's content-based readings but wary of the classic's difficulty cliff
